An estimated 1,000 people stampeded out of a soccer game in Indonesia over the weekend after supporters of arch-rival Bali were denied entry.
More than 160 policemen and military police officers scrambled to control the stampede, which saw a few hundred spectators running for cover amid a violent crush of fans carrying banners with slogans for Bali’s city rival Semarang.
Officials initially said some fans tried to enter the match without paying, resulting in the fight that was broken up by the security forces. Another 1,300 fans were allowed into the stadium after some were charged for not having valid tickets.
